Mary Logan: Interoperability

The recent Institute of Medicine report on the safety of health IT hit the nail on the head in saying that, “the current state of safety and health IT is not acceptable” and that “specific actions are required to improve the safety.”

Interoperability is a huge systems issue that will take the entire system working together to solve. Toward that end, AAMI and the FDA are co-convening a national summit on October 2-3, 2012. The working title is “From Interoperability to Integration in and Around Medical Devices: Getting Patient Safety Right.”

We need your input: What patient safety issues around integration do you want us to discuss? We’re planning the agenda now and invite your suggestions for content, speakers, issues that make this work perplexing, frustrating and complex. And be sure to put the event on your calendar—this is a multidisciplinary event, and we need all parts of the system to participate.

Do medical devices use HL7 standards in their software? Do they have bluetooth capability?
