Don Armstrong: How Are You?

Happy HTM Week! I have one question for you: How are you?

Wow is that a loaded question! But I mean this with all sincerity. It has been just over a year and a half since our world(s) were turned upside down, and I am sure we are all now in a very different place.

As we celebrate HTM Week and get ready to attend AAMI Exchange Rewired (virtually), we recognize that things are getting better, but it is still a very different world out there for us. Let’s take this time to celebrate and congratulate ourselves for a job well done. Be proud, but also remember to lift someone else up this week, as we have all been in this together.

So many things have changed for us in the HTM field: How and where we work, jobs were lost or reduced, and challenges that we could have not even imagined. It has been beyond tough and even scary. The silver lining—if there is one—is that we are appreciated and have had the opportunity to shine even more than before.

A lot has changed for me, too. In the past 18 months, I left my job that I loved and moved to Florida in hopes of sunny days and continuing my biomed career there. Then the pandemic hit. My wife (also in the medical field) and I started reaching out to everyone we knew to find out where we could go and where we could help.

We were both lucky to get connected with organizations that needed our help. I was fortunate to be hired by Renovo as a BMET III. I’ve been helping sites around the country, and I must tell you it has been eye opening.

The HTM teams I have worked with and the hospitals I was able to travel to were all doing such a great job in the face of so many unknowns. No matter where I went, HTM professionals were all so dedicated and steadfast about their jobs servicing the equipment. They are also frontline caregivers as far as I am concerned.

The clinical staff were all so inclusive with us that I felt that we were really making a difference. It felt good to see our teams getting recognized for their work—that’s usually not the case as we work in the background making the technology go.

What I wanted to ask again is, “How are you doing?” Are you burned out? Exhausted? Feel underappreciated or ignored? Or are you feeling stronger with each day?

I would love to hear back from you to let me know how you are doing and how your department or hospital is celebrating HTM Week (please comment below). I have never been prouder to be an HTM professionals than I have been the past year plus!

Don Armstrong, CBET, CHTM, is a BMET III at Renovo Solutions.
